Women's Recap: #22/23 Syracuse Pulls it Out 90-84 over Dukes

Workman notches double-double with 24 and 11 off the bench

In an exciting game in the AJ Palumbo Center, the Syracuse women knocked off the Dukes 90-84.   Briana Day from Syracuse was the difference, notching 22 points and a hard fought 19 boards.  Day responded when the Cuse needed her the most.  After a layup by Deva'Nyar Workman cut the Syracuse lead to 76-75 with around 4 minutes to play, it was all Briana Day.  The next possession, Day got the layup to extend the Syracuse lead to 78-75.  She then followed it up by grabbing two offensive boards on the before putting it in, putting the Cuse up 5.  On the Dukes next possession, Day blocked a shot by Workman, and then grabbed yet another offensive board on the Orange offensive possession that eventually wound up with an and-one that was the final dagger in the coffin for the Dukes.  The Dukes did rally to cut the lead to 88-84, and the battling Dukes had a couple of chances to cut it to two with eleven seconds left.  However, April Robinson and Belma Nurkic both missed six footers and Syracuse hit their freebies to make it a six point victory for Syracuse over a gritty Duquesne team in the Palumbo Center.

As for the Dukes, despite the loss this was a very encouraging performance against a top 25 team.  The general feeling going into the game was that the Dukes may be competitive for a half before Syracuse would pull away and make it look not that close.  Yet, the Dukes hung in well.  Deva'Nyar Workman was a spark offensively off the bench, scoring 24 and fighting hard for 11 boards.  Her name suits her well.  However, she still has some growing to do, as she committed two needless fouls late, one for an over the back and another off the ball within twelve seconds.  Eventually teams will quit guarding her as much around the perimeter as Workman is not a shooter, but until then she has the potential to put up some big numbers.  She's a high motor player who fights for everything and is a very good get for Burt.  She also can handle the ball as the backup PG.  April Robinson had a solid game and may be the second best point in the A-10 right now, and the A-10 has a couple of good ones.  Jose Ann Johnson played the best I've seen her play in a Dukes uniform, as she looked inspired tonight.  Amadea Szamosi played another efficient game, though her fourth foul a little over eight minutes left took some of the steam out of her play.  She was perhaps a bit too tentative coming back off the bench late with four fouls also.  Liv Bresnahan was her normal self.  It was nice seeing Emilie Gronas hit a few threes off the bench...the Dukes will certainly need her shooting going forward.  She's not the best athlete, but she's more of one than some people give her credit for.  Nurkic got off to a hot start to the game to get the team going.  Pretty much everyone contributed in making it a close, exciting performance against a top 25 team.  It's certainly one that the Dukes can be proud of even in the loss.  There's nothing wrong with playing well  and going down swinging against a top 25 team.  It was a much, much better performance than the one put on against Princeton and is very encouraging.

The next game is at Green Bay on Saturday.  Green Bay is an excellent team, and their women have more of a stranglehold on the Horizon than Butler men even did.  It will be yet another good early test for the Dukes.

New Women's Coach: Dan Burt

by Dave Morus

http://www.goduquesne.com/sports/w-baskbl/mtt/burt_dan00.html

If you follow that link to Duquesne's athletic site, you'll see that Dan Burt is listed as the new head coach. This is in opposition to McConnell-Serio's initial announcement that all of her assistants would be following her to Pitt.

Nothing official is out yet in terms of an announcement, but his official bio would seem to tell the story:

Screenshot taken Saturday at 8:28 AM

Burt is regarded as an excellent recruiter and has been on the WBB staff since 2007. He provides continuity and, hopefully, an avenue to maintain the incoming recruiting class.

Welcome (back)!

Women's Preview: at Bowling Green, 2nd Rount NIT

Video Location:  (Not sure if it's pay or free):  http://www.mac-sports.com/Schools/BowlingGreen/LiveStreaming.aspx

Previous Games:  Duquesne made a late run after a very slow start in the first round of the WNIT tournament.  Fortunately, it was enough to knock off the Akron Zips of the MAC.  Bowling Green beat a quality SMU team at home 76-70.

This time around, the Dukes will have a more formidable challenge, at Bowling Green...a team that beat Dayton by 25 earlier this year and another top 50 team in Central Michigan also by 25 earlier this year.  While inconsistent, Bowling Green is a solid team, particularly at home, and will give the Dukes all they can handle.  If the Dukes aren't ready or are still reeling from not being selected to the NCAAs, they're certainly out in round 2.

Scouting BGSU:

Player to watch:  Chrissy Steffen.  The senior SG/SF is the classic stat sheet stuffer from the SG position.  Not a terrific shooter, Chrissy will do everything else to help her team win by hitting the boards hard, playing extremely solid D, and finding a way to be in the right place at the right time.  Averages only 11.2 and 4.6, but a lot of that is that she's not always looking for her shot.

Next up is Alexis Rogers, a Duke transfer.  6-1 PF.  Solid defensive player with a  very physical game.  Has a good inside game herself on O, but the strength is on defense.

After that, it's Jillian Halfhill, a seemingly undersized PG.  Plays a smart, disciplined game.  I don't remember much else, sorry.

After that, Bowling Green to me seemed like a true team.  They sub liberally, with no standouts and all players of seemingly very equal ability.  The liberal substitutions will provide a challenge for the Dukes, who aren't that deep, particularly on the road.  Surprisingly, for all the liberal subs, Bowling Green plays a slowdown halfcourt game that is often quite physical.

Bowling Green excels in hitting the defensive glass hard from what I've seen, and the Dukes offensive rebounding ability may decide the game as one of Duquesne's strengths is offensive rebounding.   The Falcons also defend the three ball very well from the couple of games I've seen.  The green light is always on for Bowling Green threes, even when they're not hitting them.  When not shooting threes, the Falcons inside find ways to get to the free-throw line quite well.  Turnovers are a huge problem for Bowling Green, and Floyd's defense and forcing turnovers is another key for DU.

Common opponents:
Temple (DU home win, BG home loss)
Dayton (BG home win, DU road loss)

Miami-Ohio (DU home loss, BG split)
Buffalo (DU road win, BG sweep)
Ohio (DU road win, BG sweep)
UMass (both teams won)

Prediction:
Sagarin spread:  Duquesne by 3.
My prediction:  Bowling Green 54-52.  Hope I'm wrong...

The A10's Five-Bid Swan Song

by Dave Morus

Swan Song - n. - the last act or manifestation of someone or something; farewell appearance

We knew going into the season that the A10 was going to lose some teams. Temple had announced its intentions to move on to what is for only a short while longer the Big East (a move they must be questioning now) and Charlotte decided to return to CUSA to pursue their football dreams. The long-rumored football/basketball split in the Big East had been discussed, but it seemed to be something that would take time to materialize.

Of course, as we know, that time is now. Xavier and Butler are all but out, and there is the possibility of losing SLU and Dayton to the Mid-Major Big East in the near future. I could comment on many things. I could discuss, for example how the Dayton media market (the stunning 63rd largest) gives this league nothing, especially when you already have Xavier in western Ohio, but I would probably end up sounding grumpy and bitter. And we wouldn't want that.

So it seems that it is time to bid a wistful farewell to what we have known of the Atlantic 10 conference. It will absolutely live on in one form or another, but the fact remains that - although we have five bids - two of those five schools are leaving, and a third could soon be out as well.

Women will play in WNIT

by Dave Morus

After being snubbed - the only team with a top 40 RPI to miss the dance -the Duquesne women will regroup and play host to the Zips of Akron in the first round of the WNIT this Thursday, with the time to be announced. They join fellow conference members Butler, Charlotte, Fordham, and Richmond in the tournament.

At the time of this writing, full brackets had not been announced. However, you can now find the bracket here.

The Zips finished 23-9 (12-4) this year. The only ranked opponent that they played, Dayton, crushed them 90-59. It is worth noting that the Zips narrowly lost to Saint Francis (PA), whom the Dukes beat rather handily.

Should the Dukes win, they will play the winner of the Bowling Green/Southern Methodist game. GoDuquesne says that ticket information will be up shortly. I'd take the obvious guess of "tomorrow."

Updates will be posted here as they come in. Go Dukes!

Women's Senior Day at 2 PM & Butler Scouting Report

by Rogabee

Butler (17-11, #105 RPI) at Duquesne (21-6, #35 RPI)

Seniors Vanessa Abel, Jocelyn Floyd, and Ahjah Hall will (hopefully) be playing their last game at the Palumbo Center in their careers.  It's been a great four years for the four seniors, also counting Carly Vendemia, who missed this year to injury.  Vanessa, Jocelyn, Ahjah, and Carly became the senior class with the most wins in DU history.  They had four straight twenty-win seasons, something only one other class ever at Duquesne could say.  It's been a fabulous run for these four seniors who deserve your support for senior night.  A special thank you to the seniors from me...it's been a pleasure watching you the last four years become the most decorated class in DU women's history.

Erin "E" Waskowiak as a WPIAL Champ

Angela Heintz as a WPIAL runner-up
as Bishop Canevin Defeats Seton-La Salle

by Rogabee

---

I got the privilege of taking in a few WPIAL title games at the Palumbo Center this weekend.  The meaningful game to Dukes fans was the matchup between Seton-LaSalle and Bishop Canevin.  Seton-La Salle coming into the game hadn't lost to an in-state team all year and won the previous eight meetings vs. Bishop Canevin, including a 31 point win on television earlier this year. Not last night, however.

Erin "E" Waskowiak didn't even get mentioned in the game story in the Trib or Mike White's game blog due to her lack of scoring.  However, outside of Johnie Olkosky's amazing shooting evening with seven treys, Erin Waskowiak was the story of the night in my opinion.  It hasn't been since Shawn James at Oakland that I've seen someone score two points in a half but yet dominate the half the way Waskowiak did against a Seton-La Salle team.

Women vs. St. Joe's

The Matchup - Perhaps the biggest home game in Duquesne women’s history
St. Joe’s (16-6, 7-1 A10, 47 RPI) at Duquesne (19-4, 8-1 A10, 30 RPI)

DU Women vs. Fordham Preview

DU Women vs. Fordham Preview

by Rogabee

Duquesne enters the game at 15-3, #42 RPI, 4-0 in the conference, and looking for their first ever 5-0 start in conference play.  Fordham enters also 4-0 in conference play (#85 RPI), and the winner will remain as one of only three unbeaten teams left in the A10 along with Dayton and Saint Joe's.  Fordham has won 10 of their last 11.

Key Players for Fordham

Fordham is led by Marah Strickland, a 6th year senior transfer from South Carolina (previously went to Maryland before transferring to South Carolina).  A previous Parade and McDonald's All-American coming out of high school, Marah is one of the very few players in the A10 who can create her own shot.  Plays the PF as a 6-footer, and should be a good challenge for Orsi to contain.

B1G adds Maryland, Rutgers

By Dave Morus

It comes as no surprise after the rumors and speculation of the past several days, but the Big Ten has indeed enticed Maryland away from the ACC and threw Rutgers a lifeline and pulled them in from the sinking Big East. Reports of what these two bring to the conference at the moment (there are a lot of mixed reactions there) abound.

But this is a Duquesne blog. So... read on after the jump.

I wonder how this will ultimately affect the Atlantic 10. The ACC is left with an odd number of schools, which is seemingly counter to their recent expansion goals. The Big East is as well.

The ACC has shown a tendency to poach from the Big East in the past, and it looks like that will be the case once again. There's a lot of talk about Louisville and UConn. Boston College has long been opposed to UConn joining the conference, but they may be out of other viable options. This CBS Sports article also says that Cincinnati and South Florida are being considered as well. It may well be inevitable that the Big East is going to lose another team.

This potentially solves the other problem - an uneven Big East. Yet the changes could scare off some of the schools that are planned to join but haven't to this point, a la TCU a year or two ago. Then there are the rumors that Houston can leave the conference without penalty if TV revenues don't reach a certain amount. This is all scary for the A10 because the Big East has shown a tendency to poach from just about anywhere, regardless of how much or how little sense it makes.

Football has been driving the expansion, but the Big East continues to add schools that are not strong in that area. Memphis is woeful. Navy is a respectable institution, but does not have the football clout of old. UCF and Houston are reasonable but unspectacular. SMU is mediocre, with some disaster seasons in very recent memory. All of these are thought by the conference to be "acceptable" additions to the Big East.

So, for all the problems that are discussed with the UMass football program, it wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility for the Big East to take them. It isn't like their expansion plans have been based upon the highest quality in the past. Or, you know, logic.

Of course, this is all speculation. One thing is certain, though. With it's odd mix of football and basketball schools, as long as the Big East is unstable, fans of the Atlantic 10 have good cause to be nervous.

The Duquesne Pep Song

by Dave Morus

From time to time, I like to put forward some information about Duquesne History. I like old things, and I like music. Luckily, I had the opportunity to combine those passions when I discovered little-known Duquesne spirit songs on eBay some years ago. I have them framed and hanging on our living room wall.

It's been more than a year since the firsts installment, but I only have three of these pieces of sheet music. If I don't space out these entries, the series would be over before it began! The second obscure Duquesne tune in my possession is simply entitled "Duquesne Pep Song," shown to the left.

Women vs. Liberty (Preseason WNIT) Preview

by Rogabee

Discuss on Yuku

While most will be watching the men's game at Albany, there will be another game going on of significance for Duquesne sports.  Rather than following the men's game online, hopefully some folks will go to the AJ Palumbo Center to watch the women host Liberty Lady Flames at 7:00.

Liberty is the defending Big South Champions, finishing with a 21-9 record overall, and #92 by the RPI.  By comparison, Duquesne finished last season #91 in the RPI.  It appears to be a battle of two top-100 teams, one which DU could use come Selection Sunday and that Albany could use to get out of the 16 seed if they win the Big South tournament.

Liberty is the dominant team in the Big South Conference, and that's not changing anytime soon.  Liberty is once again favored to win the Big South Conference, which marks the 15th time in 16 years.

The winner will play the winner of Davidson/North Carolina  (Can we put that in the game notes somewhere please?  Thanks!)

Duquesne Injury Update

Per Duquesne's game notes, Carly Vendemia missed the scrimmage due to a stress fracture and is out indefinitely.

Temple Out, Butler In: What does it mean for the A10 and Duquesne?

by Rogabee

Discuss on Yuku

I'll be taking a look at what the switch of Temple and Butler does to the A10 from a variety of different angles including men's hoops, women's basketball, and television in this post.

Primary Sport:  Men's Hoops

Losing Temple is obviously a huge loss for the A10.  There's no way to sugarcoat that.  With Temple going to the Big East, the A10 loses a team that was in the top 100 of the RPI for 9 of the last 10 years and has made the tourney four of the last five years under Dunphy.  Temple consistently scheduled as hard out of conference as anyone in the country even despite their MAC deal for football.  One of the two flagships for the A10 is gone.

Duquesne vs. Temple Women's Preview

by Rogabee

NOTE:  GAMETIME is 4PM for a doubleheader.

Duquesne:  13-4, #54 in the RPI (2-3 vs. RPI top 100), 3-4 on the road
Temple:  8-8, #62 RPI (1-7 vs. RPI top 50, 4-7 vs. RPI top 100)

The Dukes will have a week off to prepare for a Temple team that could give the Dukes a quality W they'll desperately need come March.  Temple will present a tough challenge for the Dukes, however.  Temple for a while earlier this year started three transfers - Shey Peddy (leading scorer at 15 PPG) from Wright State, Brittany Lewis of Virginia Tech, and Joelle Connelly, a center out of Hofstra.  However, Connelly has been replaced in the starting lineup by 6-4 Victoria Macaulay and hasn't played in 2 of the last 4 games.

Mamadou Datt a Duke, Aiche Ndao to the Ladies?

by Face

Discuss this on Yuku

Mamadou Datt
Mamadou Datt, a 6'9" player from Stoneridge Preparatory School in Simi Valley, CA, has apparrently accepted a scholarship offer to Duquesne and is enrolled. Thanks to our friend UncivilDKizzle for finding this information and alerting us to it!

Back in January, Datt (pictured to the left from a team photo on Facebook) was reported as receiving interest from UCSB, Cal-Irvine, UCLA, Fresno State, Cleveland State, and Utah State. Some basketball message boards had found a Stoneridge highlight video on YouTube, but that video has since been made private.

Rivals made mention at one point about a player named Selle Hann, also a Stoneridge player, whom Duquesne was interested in. The speculation could be made that Datt was found in the scouting of Hann and impressed the coaches. Certainly wouldn't be the first time something like that has happened.

Otherwise, there isn't a whole lot out there on this guy. Certainly a welcome to the bluff is extended on behalf of the DU fanbase to young Datt. I'm hoping that he's a legit baller and that signs proclaiming "Who Datt!?" can be triumphantly raised within the confines of AJP.

Aiche Ndao
The same Facebook post (found at the bottom of this article) that would seem to confirm this information also mentions another player - Aiche Ndao. Though Stoneridge doesn't have a women's team, Ndao practices with the guys as reported on one of the school's facebook photos. Other information on her is unclear.

Of course we also extend a welcome to Ndao.

Certainly we will be giving you more information as it comes out. For now, feel free to discuss our two newest Dukes on the Yuku Board.

2010-2011 Athletic Department Lows

Discuss Here on Yuku

Since we covered the highlights...now for the lowlights...
Special emphasis was put on men's basketball as it is the feature sport at DU.

1.     The collapse of the men’s basketball team.  Losing three games near the end of the season to teams you beat by double digits earlier in the year – Dayton, St. Louis, and the tourney to St. Joe’s, was disheartening to say the least.

2.     Along with that, the collapse keeps the Dukes out of the NCAA tournament as well as the NIT.  Given the start and 11-0 run the Dukes had, most fans were expecting more.

 3.     The women's basketball team finishes on the "Last Four Out" list on both ESPN and collegerpi.com.  Unfortunately, the Dukes don't dance, and are left behind in the NIT.  Disappointing?  Yes.  Heck of a season?  Absolutely.

4.     The Dukes men's basketball team finishes 1-3 at the Consol Center, their home away from home.  Most disheartening was perhaps the physical nature in which Xavier dominated the Dukes to close out the game in front of a sold-out lower bowl.

5.      Duquesne lost an icon, Nellie King.  While Nellie King will be most remembered for his work with the 'Buccos, what he did at Duquesne will be remembered.

2010-11 Athletic Department Highs

Discuss this on Yuku

As high school graduations wind down and we near a new basketball season that will begin with Greentree soon, here at YukuDukes we're taking a minute to reflect back on the 2010-2011 athletic year, both the ups and downs.  Thus, without further ado...the top 20 highs, worst 10 lows of the athletic department season (selected by a forgetful selection committee...me...so let me know if I missed something):

Top 20 Highs of the 2010-2011 Athletic Department Season.
1.       Duquesne women’s basketball team wins at future Big 10 tourney champions  Ohio State 71-67.  The Dukes, down by 8 with about 5 minutes to go, cap off an incredible comeback vs. the Buckeyes on a Kelly Britcher trey with 9 seconds left.  The Dukes finish with a 24-9 season (tied for 3rd in the A10).
2.       The Dukes men's hoops team runs of 11 straight wins before a heartbreaking loss in Olean on a three near the buzzer, including a rout of Temple.  It marked the Dukes best start ever in A10 play.
3.       Duquesne men’s basketball team gets their first out-of-conference postseason win in what seems like an eternity at Montana.
4.       The Dukes could sell out the lower bowl of the CEC.  Quite an accomplishment for a team whose home court capacity currently is below 5,000.
5.       That the Dukes would be the hottest ticket for an opposing team in the A10 this season (at St. Bona).
6.       Dukes have their first winning conference season in the NEC in football, highlighted by a 35-31 home win over Dayton, which featured a Sean Patterson touchdown pass with 21 seconds left to cap a 66 yard drive that started with 1:18 left on the clock for the win.
7.       The Dukes took care of their City Game opponent quite often across the board.  Women's basketball, men's and women's cross-country, and women's tennis all beat the Panthers.  The only varsity program to lose to the Panthers (outside perhaps rowing, where results are tough to find) was men's basketball.

Women vs. Kent State

by Face

Discuss this on Yuku

It's time for the WNIT. The ladies of Duquesne will be taking on Kent State at the AJ Palumbo Center. This is the third year in a row that Suzie McConnell-Serio's iteration of the Dukes will be playing in this event. Certainly we hoped for the NCAA, but clearly the future is bright for the ladies. You need look no further than A10 Rookie of the Year Wumi Agunbiade.

The Dukes are only 14-15 against schools from the MAC, but this year bested all MAC competition that they faced this year. Here's hoping for another! This one will be a short blurb then it is off to bed for me! Read on!
