While this has been out there for a while, it is certainly worth mentioning!
Some encouraging news for the football team today as incoming Freshman and Monessen grad Chavas Rawlins has signed a financial aide agreement with the school. Rawlins was an effective passer and rusher while at Monessen, combining for nearly 2000 yards and 25 touchdowns on offense. He was named to the PG's Fabulous 22 and the Trib's Terrific 25.
Another encouraging facet to this is the list of schools that pursued him. Many large programs in the Big 10, ACC, SEC, and Big East made offers - including Pitt. Quarterbacks Coach Jake Spavital was apparently central to Chavas's recruitment to the program, and his leaving impacted Rawlins and at least in part led to this decision. Other factors included a desire to be close to home and wanting to play immediately. He was likely headed for a redshirt season at WVU.
Rawlins was an all-state quarterback in Class A. There's no question - if his past performance is indicative of his future potential, he could make an impact for the Dukes. Welcome to the Bluff!

The Duquesne Pep Song

From time to time, I like to put forward some information about Duquesne History. I like old things, and I like music. Luckily, I had the opportunity to combine those passions when I discovered little-known Duquesne spirit songs on eBay some years ago. I have them framed and hanging on our living room wall.
It's been more than a year since the firsts installment, but I only have three of these pieces of sheet music. If I don't space out these entries, the series would be over before it began! The second obscure Duquesne tune in my possession is simply entitled "Duquesne Pep Song," shown to the left.

The Mid - Major Debate Settled

Like most fans of Atlantic 10 schools, the word mid major is like nails to the chalk board when it's used to describe your school. Nothing annoys us more then when that blanket term is used to describe our team. To some fans, it's an honor to be considered to a mid major or end up on a list of mid majors. To others, it's an insult.
I think lazy or big program centered journalists and fans throw the mid major label around too liberally and use it to simply describe schools as "not BCS." Clearly there are more tiers than just BCS and mid major. While there are some conferences that disdain the term, there are some too small to deserve it as well. I would suggest that three labels, high major, top mid major and small conference, are missing from the college hoops lexicon. So where do you draw the lines? I have some thoughts after the jump.
