Ovie Soko incoming?

by Dave Morus

According to multiple tweets, big man Ovie Soko will transfer from UAB and land at Duquesne. If true, this represents the fifth and final available scholarship for the upcoming school year.

At UAB, Soko averaged 8 points per game and nearly 7 rebounds per game last season. It wasn't long ago that Dukes fans noted that a player who could offer 8 and 8 would be a welcome player in the middle. Soko may be that player, at least for one year.

He was a solid shooter, at a rate of .456 from the field. His foul shooting is not as good at .594. His sophomore season was better in almost every statistical category, though he is said to be looking for a change of scenery.

Soko must sit and then will fulfill his final year of eligibility with the Dukes season after next. He must sit a year.

In an article about the transfer, al.com had these quotes:
Huckaby said Soko was looking for a style of play that "allows him to get up and down" the floor and "play his natural position at small forward."
Davis system didn't fit those requirements and it's unclear where Soko would line up under the new staff, although Haase does prefer a fast tempo style.
Ferry's first class brings some balance to the Dukes in terms of class. Rather than add five freshman, he has added three, and then one to the sophomores, and one to the juniors (who won't play until they are seniors).
